Determine Your Wants and Needs in a Home

Buying a home in Portland, OregonBefore you even start looking at houses, you should create a realistic list of “wants” and “needs”. This will allow you to narrow your search to fewer houses, and this is important considering the number of houses available for sale in the current Portland real estate market. Hunting for your next home can be very time consuming, but creating parameters based on your wants and needs will create a more focused search.

Many home buyers focus on the wants, rather than the needs, and end up not even looking at homes that would be a perfect fit. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have what you desire in a home, but you should know the difference between what you truly need and what you would like to have in your next home.

Here are a few examples of wants and needs to help you get an idea as you start to make your list:

Needs Wants
Four bedrooms Walk-in closets
Two car garage Hardwood floors
Family room Built-in entertainment center
Large lot for children to play Lot with view
Specific school district Hot tub or pool
Close to work Master suite
Home office area Wood burning fireplace

Creating your own list and sharing with your real estate agent will make your search for a home in Portland easier for you and your agent, not to mention the time saved by weeding out many of the homes currently listed in today’s Portland real estate market.
