Looking for a walkable neighborhood in Portland?
Mar 19th, 2008 | By Greg Long | Category: LifestyleHere’s a great site to check if you are in looking for a house in the Portland real estate market and want to be able to walk to all the local amenities. It’s called Walk Score. You enter an address and the site returns the Walk Score on a scale of 1 to 100, with 100 meaning that everything is within walking distance. The site has a general guideline for interpreting the score:
- 90 - 100 means walkers’ paradise
- 70 - 90 is very walkable
- 50 - 70 has some walkable amenities, but most require car travel
- under 50 is not very walkable and a car is necessary
A house we recently sold in SE Portland’s Hawthorne neighborhood has a walk score of 97 out of 100. Which is about as good as it gets for being close to shops, dining, grocers, parks, schools, etc. This house was located just a block south of the Bagdad Theater and all the boutique shops on Hawthorne Blvd.We hope that you find this a useful tool as you research the various neighborhoods in Portland as you search for your next home.
