Portland Named Greenest City in America
Jan 27th, 2008 | By Greg Long | Category: Lifestyle
Popular Science recently published their Top 50 Greenest Cities and Portland, Oregon comes in on top. Not too surprising that Portland is considered tops with the local government push for public transportation, renewable energy and green certified building practices.
Four categories were scored to come up with the rankings: electricity, transportation, green living, and recycling.
The report states that 25% of the Portland workforce commutes to work by bike. Seems high to me, but I do see more and more citizens in the bike lane these days.
The top 10 green cities from the list include:
- Portland, Oregon
- San Fransisco
- Boston
- Oakland
- Eugene
- Cambridge
- Berkeley
- Seattle
- Chicago
- Austin
Here’s the Popular Science report on America’s 50 Greenest Cities. What are you doing to help make Portland the top green city?

I wonder what was meant by the “green living” category they used to rank these cities. I also find it hard to believe that 25% commute by bike here in Portland. I try to walk or take the bus, which is easy to do. And of course, I do a lot of “green living.”
I just looked at the story again. The “Green Living” category points are determined by number of green certified buildings and devoted green space, like parks and nature preserves. Thanks for the comment!
