Hollywood Neighborhood Guide & Homes for Sale
The Hollywood neighborhood is located in lower Northeast Portland, Oregon. It has been coined many names since 1907, when it was included as part of the Rose City Park subdivision. From Crook's Tract, to Hollyrood, after the Scottish Parliament, to most recently, when it was named for the historic Hollywood Theatre. The Hollywood neighborhood is both residential and commercial, with plenty of shops and restaurants to visit. Hollywood real estate includes primarily bungalows and Craftsmen style houses. The average home price in Hollywood is around $500,000, which is one of the highest in Portland real estate. The area along Sandy is gradually being re-developed, with a new Trader Joe's and a 24-Hour Fitness. There are some great Asian restaurants, and plenty of Portland classics like Alameda Brew House.
One of its greatest features is Hollywood's proximity to Grant Park, the 19-acre park that includes basketball courts, ball fields, an off-leash dog area, a playground, and walking paths. The park also features a group of bronze statues that are dedicated to Beverly Cleary, a former resident of Hollywood and young-adult author who set many of her stories here. The Multnomah County Library has a Hollywood branch where thousands of titles can be accessed.
This is a great neighborhood for families, with mid-sized homes, well tended lawns, plenty of trees and parks, and very good elementary schools. The streets are lush with trees and the area is quiet and un-crowded, especially at night. Hollywood is located near Sandy Boulevard and Interstate 5, which are busy thoroughfares, and the Portland International Airport is close-by; the homes, however, are secluded and not disturbed by excessive road noise or traffic.
The Hollywood community has a reverence for its rich history, and that is evidence in the carefully restored homes that line the streets. In summer, beginning in 2006, the Hollywood Boosters started a tradition called “Hollywood at Night” where residences and local businesses stay open late on every third Thursday of the month. If you visit Hollywood on a regular night, you will understand what inspired the intention to enliven the nightlife - it shuts down early.
The transportation options in Hollywood and surrounding neighborhoods are many; bus service runs along NE Broadway, Fremont Street, 33rd Avenue, and Sandy Boulevard. Both the MAX Red and Blue lines stop at the Hollywood Transit Center, located a few blocks off Sandy Boulevard on NE 42nd. Driving from Hollywood to downtown Portland takes approximately 10 minutes.
