Sellwood Neighborhood of Southeast Portland
Sellwood is a popular neighborhood in Southeast Portland. With the Willamette to the west, the elevated geography of this neighborhood makes it a beautiful and peaceful place to call home. Sellwood is set apart from the city, about three miles from downtown Portland, but even so, it is not isolated. The area has no shortage of amenities. Usually, Sellwood is referred to as the Sellwood-Moreland area, which is a long oval-shaped area, with McLoughlin Boulevard curving around it on the east. Sellwood and Moreland each have their own commercial areas, but the two are seamlessly integrated. Sellwood has been part of Portland since it was annexed to the city in 1893, which perhaps explains the unique, community feel of the area. Home to Reed College, the Ivy League of alternative private schools, the students and professors, along with the numerous bookstores and a large branch of the Multnomah Public Library, make this an educated, family oriented community.
The Sellwood neighborhood is quiet and very green with huge, mature Maples and Beeches lining the streets and front yards, and luscious wisteria and vines decorating the houses. There are four parks in the greater Sellwood-Moreland area, with Oaks Amusement Park as the main attraction: a park with water access combined with near-vintage, yet fully functioning amusement park rides. In fact, it is one of the longest running amusement parks in the country. There is also the Sellwood Park, which is atop a bluff above the river, and features baseball, basketball, and tennis courts, as well as picnic tables and a community swimming pool.
There is a true village feel to the commerce section of Sellwood, with some very popular cafes and restaurants, as well as abundant antique stores including Stars, which is an antique mall spanning both sides of the street. Other unique features include a golf course, hiking trails, good elementary schools, and the Springwater Corridor, which is a bike and pedestrian-only trail.
Sellwood real estate is comprised of older East Portland homes that are typically well maintained and renovated. There are restored Victorians, cottages, Cape Cods and attractive Craftsman bungalows. The average home price in Sellwood is approximately $380,000, but the area has a mixture of mansions and modest ranch homes, depending on what section you find yourself in. There are homes over a million dollars nearby in the Eastmoreland area, which is one of the neighborhoods that comprise the Sellwood-Moreland area.
